Important limitA cotton marketing name does not replace yarn, knit, GSM and finish specifications.

Cotton variety and processing are different

Upland and Pima describe cotton species or fibre categories. Combed and ring-spun describe processing choices. A T-shirt can therefore be ring-spun Upland cotton or combed Pima cotton.

Write claims accurately. “Egyptian” refers to origin and does not by itself prove extra-long staple or finished fabric quality. Approve objective fabric and garment characteristics.

Upland cotton for versatile programs

CottonWorks reports that Upland is the dominant cotton type globally and is used across a broad range of products. Its availability and processing economics make it practical for many everyday and premium T-shirts.

Quality still varies by fibre length, strength, uniformity, yarn and knitting. Do not treat all Upland jersey as one standard.

Pima and extra-long staple direction

Pima belongs to Gossypium barbadense and has longer fibres than Upland, allowing finer yarn potential with smoothness, drape and lustre. It normally serves a more premium price position.

The finished result also depends on spinning, knitting, dyeing and finishing. A premium fibre cannot compensate for unstable construction or poor colour control.

Combed, carded and ring-spun yarn

Combing removes shorter fibres and impurities after carding, supporting smoother and more even yarn. Ring spinning is a yarn-forming system commonly associated with a softer apparel hand than open-end alternatives, but yarn count and twist also matter.

Specify the expected surface, strength, pilling and hand rather than relying on one processing label.

Blend decisions

Cotton-polyester blends can improve recovery and drying while changing touch, print behaviour and labelling. Elastane can add stretch but affects recovery, heat and care requirements.

State fibre percentages and tolerances. For U.S. sales, FTC rules require most textile products to disclose fibre content and origin accurately.

The complete T-shirt specification

Combine fibre content with yarn direction, knit structure, target GSM, width, colour, shrinkage, spirality, pilling, surface and hand feel. Approve the fabric and a finished sample.

Two 220 GSM cotton jerseys can perform differently because fibre, yarn, density, finishing and dyeing differ. Use a controlled reference for repeat orders.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pima always better than Upland?

It offers different fibre properties and premium potential, but the right choice depends on product and processing.

What does combed cotton mean?

Short fibres and impurities are removed to support a cleaner, more even yarn.

Is ring-spun cotton a fibre type?

No. Ring spinning is a yarn-making method.

Does heavier GSM mean better cotton?

No. GSM measures fabric mass, not fibre quality.

Can I use a cotton-poly blend?

Yes, when recovery, drying and hand-feel goals justify the blend and labels are accurate.

What should I request from a supplier?

Composition, yarn direction, construction, GSM, performance data and an approved physical reference.
