The core difference is import responsibility
Under DDP, the seller arranges delivery to the named destination and takes responsibility for import clearance and applicable duties within the agreed scope. Under DDU, a common commercial description related to DAP, the buyer normally handles import clearance, duties and taxes.
Write the named place and included services. A three-letter label without destination, tax treatment and exceptions is not a complete agreement.
Why brands choose DDP
DDP can simplify landed-cost planning and coordination for buyers without an established customs process. One party manages more of the route.
Confirm the route is compliant, the importer arrangement is valid, and taxes or remote-area charges are addressed. Ask for tracking, documents and a customs-question process.
Why buyers control import
Buyer-controlled import can suit businesses with a broker, freight contract, tax registration or consolidated shipping plan. It may provide greater visibility and control.
The buyer must budget for duty, tax, brokerage, storage and local delivery. Slow responses to customs can create charges and missed dates.
Information for a freight quote
Provide carton count, dimensions, gross weight, product description, composition, value, HS-code direction, pickup, delivery address and timing. Final freight often waits for packing data.
Clarify whether pickup, export documents, clearance, duty, tax, appointment delivery and insurance are included.
Plan before production ends
Review destination labels and documents during production. Confirm consignee and importer information before goods leave the factory, and allow peak-season and inspection buffer.
Incoterms and tax rules can be legally significant. Use a licensed forwarder, broker or tax adviser when allocation is unclear.
