What MOQ really means
MOQ, or minimum order quantity, is the smallest quantity a manufacturer can produce under a defined set of conditions. It is not always one fixed number for every garment. The minimum can change with fabric availability, colour, size breakdown, decoration, labels and packaging.
A 50-unit program may be practical when it uses available fabric and a manageable colour and size assortment. A custom-dyed fabric or specially developed trim can require a larger material commitment even when the sewing quantity is small.
Why small orders cost more per unit
Pattern preparation, fabric sourcing, sample development, machine setup, artwork preparation and quality documentation are required whether the order contains 50 pieces or 5,000. In a small order, those fixed costs are divided across fewer garments.
Small orders also create less efficient cutting and sewing plans. Buyers should compare total launch risk, not unit price alone: a controlled first run may protect cash flow and reveal fit or demand issues before a larger repeat order.
How to make a low-MOQ order practical
Reduce unnecessary variation. Start with one or two core colours, a focused size range and decoration that suits the fabric. Use an available base fabric where possible and postpone highly customized trims until demand is validated.
Send complete information at the start: product reference, measurements, fabric direction, artwork, label files, quantity by colour and size, packaging, destination and deadline. A complete brief reduces repeated sampling and quotation changes.
Questions to ask a manufacturer
Ask whether the MOQ applies per style, per colour or across the whole order. Confirm what happens if fabric minimums exceed the garment quantity, whether sample costs are credited, and which parts of the product can be reused for repeat orders.
